travel * Phuket, Thailand

The other weekend, I went for a short weekend get-away to Phuket for a friend’s birthday. All we wanted to do was to dive, thus Phuket was an easy choice. It’s a 4.5 hour direct flight on China Eastern with only 1 hour of time difference.

We left Shanghai after work on Friday and arrived at 2.30 in the morning in Thailand.

We stayed in Chalong Bay and went diving with the Sea Bees Dive Shop. They own a hotel (Palm Garden Resort) as well which is in walking distance to the dive shop and for a weekend trip it’s ideal, as we got to squeeze in 6 dives all together, 2 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. Sunday’s dives took place around the waters of Kho Phi Phi island and were magnificent. We saw a Leopard Shark, an Octopus and a lot of smaller creatures, snails, shrimps and of the course all of the ‘usual’ fish.

And here’s a traveler’s confession: throughout all these years of traveling I have never been brave reckless enough, to rent a scooter. In Phuket the time finally came, and it was fun. To be repeated!!

Since we had to spend a diving-free Monday before heading back home, we decided to explore Phuket a bit. My overall verdict: stay under water! It feels like a mini-Mallorca with a big German infestation (Zwiebelrostbraten, Kaffee und Kuchen, Stammtisch.. you get the idea..) – no need to ever leave the motherland.
