It was the musical highlight of summer for sure. Metallica finally played China right after they completed their theater shows in Philadelphia. The gig sold out in 4 minutes flat and I ended up purchasing the most expensive concert ticket of my life (resulting in an amazing seat right next to the stage).

What’s important to know: Metallica had not been allowed to play China in their 30 year band history. It’s a milestone in Chinese history and potentially a sign of governmental relaxation to have such an act come to the city, selling out so quickly and ultimately even adding on another date (yes.. so i could have had a cheaper ticket, but who was to know..).

They didn’t play Master (hello, puppets to the government) or One (war related lyrics don’t seem to sit well with the authorities either), but it was amazing to have thousands of Chinese banging their heads to Seek and Destroy from the 80s and sway their lighters (yes, forget cellphones – actual lighters) to Nothing Else Matters. It was a goosebumps and endorphins kind of night. I loved every minute and am so glad I invested into this historical event.

Of course it’s a bit strange to have a metal show regulated by seating rather than a moshpit, but whatever it takes to open up this country – this was definitely a step in the right direction.

Fun fact: it was also Chinese Valentine’s day and some guys thought it was a great idea to bring their unsuspecting girlfriends out for a date. Where glow sticks and Minnie Mouse ears meet Heavy Metal.

Awesome show indeed – I also made the pilgrimage down from Beijing and was so glad I saw them here, even despite catching their show in Osaka a few days before. This show was way better despite the lack of a couple of obvious favourites in the setlist – you’re right that the reaction of the crowd made it a “goosebumps and endorphins” gig!
